Learn How to Sing in Another Musical Genre

May 21st, 2010

If want to learn to sing another musical genre, you must know that it is a little bit tricky. First, it is very important that you are aware of the characteristics of the genre that you want to change. Second, it is very vital that you know to practice in that particular musical genre differently. Third is that you must be able to put your heart and soul into your performance, it is important that you sing originally and naturally in the musical language of the new music genre.

In my own experience as a professional singer here are a few steps on how to learn to sing in a new style:

•Listen – If you want to learn new style in music, it is important that you listen to professional singers that have mastery in the kind of style you want to try. Blend yourself in the melodies, vocal embellishments, rhythms, phrasing and articulation that they are using.

•Study the performances of singers – You should study and dissect the performances of the singers, whether live or taped. Observe if they lay back or they sing perfectly with the beat of the song. Count how often they do vocal licks and know what are the typical licks they are using.

The Crossover Music Genre

May 9th, 2010

Classical/Popular crossover music is massively popular today and in some circles is called Popera. The definition is generally thought of as ‘An artist who produces a variety of ‘show-tunes’ or ‘popular tunes’, when he/she would normally only record traditional, classical pieces of music. Also, collaborations between Classical and Popular artists can also be looked upon as ‘Crossover’ in style; for example, ex Police singer and bass player Sting and Edin Karamazov’s album ‘Songs from the Labyrinth’. Of course, there is such a wide variety of different genres these days that almost any type of music is being experimented with in this way.

Some artists are extremely criticized for their cross-overs by their die-hard fans and the fans of the songs they’re covering, as territory they shouldn’t really be venturing into. Others think that new life can be breathed into an old genre and will attract a wider audience. This has been the case in quite a few cases, and in fact, is no new phenomenon.

By far though, the most popular fusion of music genre is that of classical/popular. Back in the 1950’s the American tenor and film star Mario Lanza reached across his classical background to appeal to a massive audience of ‘popular’ listening fans and many of his tracks made it into the music charts. His song ‘Be my love’ made it to number one in the Billboard pop singles chart in 1951, and sold a total of 2 million copies worldwide; a feat no classical artist has achieved since. Lanza recorded two other million selling singles that made it into the Billboard chart.

Explaining The Hip Hop And Rap Music Genre

April 23rd, 2010

Hip hop music is part of hip hop culture, which began in the Bronx, in New York City in the 1970s, primarily among African Americans and Latin Americans, with considerable Jamaican influence. (two other elements are breakdancing and graffiti art).

The music may be based around either live or produced music, with a clearly defined drum beat (almost always in 4/4 time signature), presented either with or without vocal accompaniment.

Hip hop music was an outlet and a “voice” for disenfranchised youth as the culture reflected the social, economic and political realities of their lives. The music was popular there at least as far back as the late 1970s. The first Philadelphia hip hop record was “Rhythm Talk,” by Jocko Henderson in 1979, and the New York Times dubbed Philadelphia the “Graffiti Capital of the World” in 1971.

Rap is mostly influenced by hip hop. You can say that hip hop is synonymous with rap. As rap is all rhythm, very little melody, and virtually no harmony and is generally written by the younger generation for the younger generation — providing a universal voice for the young. In other words, hip hop music is a musical genre typically consisting of a rhythmic vocal style called rap which is accompanied with backing beats.

Hip hop music is further a genre of music typically consisting of a rhythmic style of speaking called rap over backing beats performed on a turntable by a DJ. The Music has really gone a long way since the days of bboys spinning on cardboard boxes listening to what is now called underground rap.

Metal Music Genre – Black Metal

April 15th, 2010

From the roots of old school thrash metal, this misinterpreted musical genre of metal music is know as Black Metal. Black Metal has been an outlet to disillusioned youth seeking for a way out of internal conflicts with personal, religious or cultures differences.. This little scene has become the mark of National Socialism and have devoted acts such as church burnings and homicide (number is as high as 50 or more churches).

Black Metal Beliefs

The most popular Black Metal group is Mayhem and VargVikernes. Vikernes was convicted of the murder to Øystein Aarseth an owner of the label Deathlike Silence in 93. Impacting as it may have been, the anti-religious and Nazi views of Vikernes should not be broken as an expression of the thoughts of the musical genre as a whole. As with any culture or sub-culture, you find in black metal disputes in opinion and beliefs.

Variants in Black Metal Music

Pioneered primarily by group such as Bathory and Cruachan, Viking lore and mythology has had a big impact on the black metal scene. These so called “folk” and “viking” metal bands often use instruments that leave from the typical norms and opt instead to use more traditional folk instruments to compliment the common electric guitar, drums, and bass. Black Metal variants include bands with an ambient, symphonic and doom metal sound have been experimented. Groups have pushed with other music like old 80’s punk movement (crust) gothic and even industrial influences.
