Jazz Music

Jazz music was born in USA in 1868. However, today, jazz no longer belongs to the American people. Jazz has become one of the musical colors that are owned by the entire world community.

In the beginning, jazz was born with Blues basic. Then, in 1987, people began to know RAG Time, which at that time in the form of piano playing in bars. RAG Time and Blues developed into a boogie – woogie. Then, the forms not only reached in their lane, but also developed through a jazz journey.

The researchers of music state that the form of jazz music that can be regarded as an early form that evolved over time to the form of the current jazz is a form of jazz around 1915 to 1917. At that time, the Negro in New Orleans played jazz music with a distinctive style, and the music became known as New Orleans jazz.

New Orleans jazz musicians presented their performances in bars, gambling houses, and even places of prostitution which in those days was flourishing in New Orleans. In 1917, almost all places of entertainment in New Orleans were closed because they were considered to reduce public concern against the government and to increase criminal activities. Then, Jazz grew out of the city of New Orleans.

Jazz musicians from New Orleans began to bring jazz music through the Mississippi River. The spread of jazz continued to the north until it came in Detroit. In the 1920s, jazz has evolved in New York, Chicago, Memphis and major cities in the United States.

What in the World is Figured Bass in Music?

Music Trends

Even many musicians haven’t heard of figured bass. Also called basso continuo, a simple explanation of the term is a short way to note chords on a musical score. If you have never heard of it, it’s most likely because the method isn’t used today. However, it could be considered akin to, or a precursor of, a modern chord chart.

Figured bass originated in the Baroque era of the17th and 18th century. Music has evolved over the centuries and still does today. The development of figured bass came in response to one of these early musical style evolutions. The Baroque music period came on the heels of the Renaissance period. Music from the Renaissance was generally characterized by its reliance upon intervals of thirds. Of course, musical trends evolve over a period of time. For this reason, it’s difficult to pinpoint an exact year when this trend shifted. Usually a new musical era is well under way before anyone realizes there has been a change. Modal characteristics of Renaissance music eventually gave way to more tonal music. The defining characteristic of tonal music is its use of fifths. This is in contrast to the previous intervals of thirds. This led the way for Baroque style music.

Composers and musicians in this period began using more elaborate instrumentation during the Baroque period. New musical instruments were being developed that contributed to the trend. Many of them had wider range capabilities, allowing for more variety in musical scores. New playing techniques were also developed, lending a distinction to music of this period such as had not previously been heard.

Jazz Music Development in the World (III)

December 4th, 2010

Jazz music that was rooted in the blues, evolved into New Orleans, RAG time, boogie woogie, dixie and swing. Then, in the early decades of the 1940s, jazz entered be bop era. Be bop music was the outlet of the Negro protest in the United States. The atmosphere of World War II made all of society and the musicians frustrated.

Therefore, in a period of 40s, the arcing of new musical forms – one of them was jump band – occurred. Jump band itself was the form of music group that brought the band music of humor and usually contained elements of porn in the lyrics. Then, jump band music branched out into R & B and inspired the form of rock’n'roll that was also a continuation of the development of boogie woogie in the direction of pop or rock music.

In be bop jazz, the limits that were applied in swing jazz were de-emphasized. Be bop jazz was also more expressive and inclined to be more progressive. Thus, since the time, progressive jazz term emerged and jazz music entered into the modern jazz era.

The emergence of rock music and its popularity throughout the world in 1946 were the toughest rival of jazz to keep going and growing. Finally, be bop collapsed and jazz became cool, so came the cool jazz term. Cool jazz lasted from 1949 until 1951. In those days, jazz experienced transition because of pressured by the popularity of rock music.
